10 Steps to Effective Book Marketing

This article is for you if you are about to publish your first book or hundredth book. It does not matter. Even if you have already published your book and you are not pleased with the sales so far, this is for you as well. 

One thing you should note before you start selling anything is that you need to plan for how you will sell that thing. Most things do not simply sell by themselves, you need to create some type of publicity or buzz to catch people’s attention. 


The marketplace is crowded and there are thousands if not millions of people who already sell the type of item(s) you sell. This is especially true if you sell popular products like books. In the United States alone, one million + books were self-published in 2017, according to Bowker.

What does this mean to you?

It simply means you need to work hard, plan and implement the right strategy if you want your book to sell.

Here are ten steps to effective book marketing you might find useful.

1. Create a Pre-Launch Website

If you want to sell more books, you need to build anticipation. Once your book goes into printing, your dedicated website MUST be ready. A website helps you to build anticipation and it makes your launch date more fulfilling.

2. Collect Emails

In this day and age, the fastest way to reach targeted buyers is by having their emails. Use your website to collect emails so you can inform those people when you finally launch

3. Have Copies of Your Books Before You Launch

One of the greatest mistakes any author can make is to announce a book launch date

4. Send Out Letters to Reputable Stores

The key to selling more books is a wide reach. Book stores have audiences you may not naturally reach. Take advantage of that and set your ducks in a row. 

5. Accept Pre-Orders After You Have Copies of Your Book

Another big mistake people make while launching their books is to accept pre-orders before they have copies of the book. Do not fall for this trap. Why? This is because a lot of things can go wrong which might delay shipping to those who paid. Be patient until you have copies of the book to verify the content and printing quality before you start accepting pre-orders.

6. Get a Team to Help You Get the Word Out

Do you remember the age-long adage, “It takes a village”. Yes, anything that will be successful takes a collective effort. Make people feel involved and watch how they will go all out for you.

7. Host a Launch Party

A launch party helps you get the word out. Your book won’t sell by being the best-kept secret. Your launch party can be online, offline or both

8. Do a Book Tour

Once your book is out, organize a book tour. The more people that know about you the better.  You don’t need a lot of money to do one. If you are thinking of the best place to start a book tour, it is on local campuses and colleges. Check online for directories and connect with student leaders who can help you promote your book to an eager audience

9. Send Free Copies to Influencers

This can be a little tricky but it’s worth the try. Influencers with a huge following can help you increase your book sales

10. Attend Events and Offer to Speak

Marketing is about positioning and visibility. The more visible you are, the higher the tendency that people would buy from you.
