5 Ways to Open Doors of Opportunity
When it comes to new opportunities, do you look for things with a closed mindset? For example, if you find yourself in the job market and you find it difficult to land a job in your field of training, will you explore other opportunities that come your way? The key to opening doors of opportunities starts with your mindset. If you believe there are opportunities in every situation you find yourself, chances are that you will most likely find more than enough opportunities. Of course, an opportunity may not immediately look like one, but if you keep pushing you will eventually find out that you are on a path of greatness.[Great Read: How to Find Your Competitive Advantage in Business]
Opening the Doors of Opportunity
If you are thinking of opening the doors of opportunity, you must pay attention to the word, “open”. That word is a verb and a verb by definition means an action word. This means that in order for doors of opportunities to open, you must be willing to act. Opportunity is not usually something that falls on your lap, rather, it’s something you need to be intentional about. Below, I share five (5) steps you can take to open the doors of opportunity.
1. Identify Your Overall Goal
Identifying your overall goal and why you want to achieve that goal is always the first step in opening the door of opportunity. Knowing your goal helps you to stay on track while also gives you an edge when the timing is right. If you do not have an overall goal in mind, you might end up working hard all your life with little to nothing to show for it.
Once you identify your goal, be sure to write it down so you can always reference it. Start by looking at a bigger picture, make outlines and design specific strategies that will help you reach those goals.

2. Understand That Opportunities Are Everywhere
One of the reasons why so many people are surrounded by doors of opportunity yet they fail to open them is because they have a set picture in their mind of how a door of opportunity should look like. Also, many people believe that the path to doors of opportunity is a straight line. This, however, is almost never the case. Most doors of opportunity don’t look like one and the path to getting to those doors are usually filled with unexpected twists and turns. The key to finding and eventually opening the doors of opportunity is to understand that opportunities are everywhere.
Understanding that opportunities are everywhere helps you bring your best attitude to the table wherever you find yourself. It also helps dig a little deeper while others are busy scratching the surface.
Have you ever heard of the phrase, “your network is your net worth”? Do you believe in it? Well, whether you believe in it or not, the truth is the quality of the people you know determines the quality of our life. If you do not know great people, it will be hard to find doors of opportunity let alone open them.
Who are the people who have achieved similar goals to yours? Are you currently in connection with them? Do they know you by name? If they don’t know you or you are yet to connect with such people, then it’s time to find out how and where they spend their time and meet them there. It’s called networking. Networking with people whose goals are similar to yours provide you with a great opportunity for proper positioning. When you properly position yourself in proximity to those that matter, the doors of opportunity will keep on opening for you.
So, the next time you hear about networking events that will attract those with goals similar to yours, be sure to show up and show out![Great Read: How to Make Your Brand Attractive to Small Business Investors]
4. Intern /Volunteering
This is probably the fastest way to opening the doors of opportunity but many people fail to understand the hidden treasure embedded in internship or volunteering. As an intern or volunteer, chances are you get paid very little or you don’t get paid at all. However, this does not mean you should not give it your best shot. If you do a great job during your internship, you might get retained and even if you don’t get retained, you’ll gain invaluable experience that might help you do well in your future endeavors. The key here is to give your 110% whether you are being paid or not. It will surely pay off – either immediately or in the nearest future!
5. Keep on Knocking
A closed-door does not always mean no one is on the other side and that’s why you must be committed to keep on knocking. Continuous knocking will most likely generate a response in the end and even if you get no response, you’d at least know you tried your best before moving to the next door. The more doors you knock, the higher your chances of finding excellent opportunities.
In all, the most important things are your mindset and attitude. If you can get those two things right, doors of opportunity will continually open for you. Be positive, say words of affirmation to yourself daily and always look at the big picture.
