As a business owner or entrepreneur, one of your duties will be to persuade people. From trying to convince your vendor to agree to your terms of negotiation to trying to close a sale to convincing your employees to work harder, persuasion is one skill you need for success in business and in life. Ironically, as important as the skill of persuasion is, many business owners still struggle with it.
If you are a business owner and you are looking to learn more about how to build your persuasion skills, here are seven (7) solid ways.
1. Build Trust
The word, “trust” is abstract, but it’s an essential element you need if you truly want to persuade people. That’s because many people associate spending with some type of pain or loss. Spending, to them, means parting away with hard-earned money therefore, they are weary even before the start of a negotiation or transaction process.
However, when people trust you, their defense mechanism is not as strong, and you have a higher chance of persuading them. In building your trust, all you need is to be consistent in your daily habits and character. Your words, how you react and your track record all add up.
People watch if you keep to your words, they study if you are a person of integrity and they also study how you handle difficult situations. So, if you truly want to persuade people, you need to do things that help you build trust with others.
2. Care Genuinely About Other People
Caring for others genuinely looks like an easy thing to do on the surface. However, if you dive deeper and assess the word, “care” critically, you’ll find out that it’s not an easy thing to do. Humans are generally selfish – it’s the way we are wired – and therefore, it takes a great effort to genuinely care about others.
If you have a business that you’ve spent so much money on, all that’s in your head is how to recoup your investment and even make a profit. However, there are many times where things don’t just go the way you expect, and you might be tempted to sell things to customers that they don’t need. This is where genuinely caring about others comes in. If you care about people and you are trying to sell to them because you truly want to alleviate their problems, then it becomes easier to persuade them.
3. Don’t be Desperate
Being a business owner is hard and there will be some moments that desperation might set in. Desperation might be a result of piling debts and the pressure you feel from within. The problem, however, with desperation is that people around you can feel it while you are totally oblivious of it.
When you are desperate, it’s hard to convince people. Even if the people you are talking to need what you are trying to sell to them, your desperation becomes a big turn off.
4. Respect Other People’s Point of View
If you truly want to learn how to persuade people, then you need to master the art of respecting other people’s point of view. It does not matter how great or grand your idea is, there will be some people who will oppose it. When people oppose you, do not try to disrespect them because of that.
Also, understand that everything in life is all about perspective and that, the way we all see things are different. The moment you begin to respect other people’s point of view is the moment people will begin to respect your point of view as well. This goes with the saying, “respect is reciprocal”. The moment you begin to respect other people’s point of view is the moment you can influence and persuade them.[Great Read: Are You an Introvert? Here Are 5 Super Tips to Become a Better Salesperson]
5. Be Knowledgeable
Knowledge is power and rightly so. Having knowledge means that you are clearly in the know and that’s exactly what people are looking for. As a business owner, you can persuade prospects to act if you are knowledgeable about your products and how your products can help them reach their goals.
In addition, being knowledgeable also helps you to appear more confident and once people notice your confidence then it becomes easy to convince them. To build up your knowledge, know your product and industry inside out. Attend exhibitions, sign up for news and trends alert and read up products’ description from manufacturers.
6. Put a “Face” Behind Your Name
What does it mean to put a “face” behind your name? It simply means let people know the key actors. People want to know whether they are dealing with a real person or not. So, if you want people to trust your brand or if you want to learn how to persuade them, then you must be willing to put a face behind your name.

7. Be Energetic
Selling is a transfer of energy and the more energetic you are, the higher the likelihood that you can persuade others. How can one be energetic? Being or becoming energetic starts with being passionate about what you do. People can feel your passion thousands of miles away and it makes them want to listen to what you have to say.
The opposite is true if your energy is low. Think about how many times you’ve had to deal with entrepreneurs with low energy, how did that make you feel? Were you persuaded? Most likely, not. Having a great energy is a way of transferring good vibes and that way, you can persuade people with ease.
