How to Post on Instagram: A Step-by-Step Guide
Instagram has 800 million active users and that makes it a great platform to use in reaching your target audience and building your brand. However, the platform can be cumbersome to work with especially if you are yet to get a wing of it. Instagram like every other social media platform has its peculiarity. A few peculiar things about Instagram for Business are:
1. You can only post content on Instagram from a phone or tablet
Unlike Facebook, whereby you can post from either a desktop, laptop, phone or tablet, Instagram only works on phones and some tablets that support the app. You can still log in to your Instagram from a desktop or laptop and you can also like and comment on your followers’ accounts but you can’t post directly. If you want to create a post on Instagram, you need a phone or a tablet that is compatible with the app.
2. You need a picture/graphic design to post on Instagram
This is another Instagram feature that makes it different from other platforms. Instagram is a picture-sharing platform and therefore it’s impossible to post on the platform without posting a picture. In contrast, platforms like Facebook and Twitter give you the option of creating content without necessarily attaching a picture/graphic design to it.
3. You can’t post videos less than 3 seconds

Now that you’ve learned a few of the things that are peculiar to Instagram, it’s time to learn how to create a post on the platform. Just follow the steps below and you’ll be on your way to posting on Instagram like a pro.
- Open up the app on your phone and click the “+” icon at the bottom of the screen.
- Once you click the “+” icon, a page where you can choose pictures from your gallery appears.
- Crop the image if necessary
- Try a carousel post
- Choose a filter.
- Type your caption.
- Use hashtags for post-optimization
- Tag others.
- Add your location.
- Play with emojis.
- Share the post on other social media platforms. You’d have to allow permissions to do this
1. Tap the + icon at the bottom of your screen
This is where it all begins. Once you tap the “+” icon, all the pictures on your phone’s gallery will pop up.
2. Choose a photo or video from your library
Scroll through and then tap the desired picture or graphic design. Alternately, you can use your phone to take a picture if you do not want to post pictures already saved on your phone.
Once you choose an image, click “Next” in the top right.
3. Crop the image
Instagram favors pictures that are square, but you can also upload some rectangular pictures. To be sure your image fits in nicely, use your fingers to squeeze in the picture on the screen. However, while Instagram does allow vertical and horizontal options, the images still need to fit into some specific dimensions. So, you might still need to crop a tiny bit of your photo to get it to fit.

4. Try a carousel post
A carousel post allows you to post up to 10 pictures at once. If that’s what you want, tap the icon just above your photos to the right that looks like stacked squares. Once you tap this, you’ll see a number on the corner of every image or video you tap. 5. Pick a filter
This is optional but can be helpful is either enhancing your image or blurring some parts of it. Instagram offers 25 filters — scroll to the right to pick the option you desire. You can also click “edit” at the bottom right to adjust contrast, brightness, etc.

6. Type your caption
A short caption is preferable because Instagram users favor pictures that tells a story than long boring words.
Be creative while writing and try to write a caption that will leave the user longing for more.
7. Use hashtags for post-optimization
. Hashtags are like aggregators. You can use it to search for similar posts to yours and people can use it to find your posts as well
Bonus tip: Use a branded hashtag for your brand so your mind can stick in the minds of users
8. Tag others
If there’s anyone you want to tag, this is the opportunity to do so. To tag others, just tap the “tag” tab below the picture/graphic design you are about to post then type the handle pf the person and click the name once it comes up.
9. Add your location.
Adding your location will portray you as an instantaneous, real and personable character. When you post an image or video with a location, it will show up between your name and the block of content on the feed.
10. Play with emojis
Emojis can be fun and they can make your posts more personable. However, be careful not to overuse them else you come off as unserious or that you lack real substance
11. Share the post on other social media platforms
After you’ve shared your post on Instagram, you can decide to share directly on other platforms like Facebook and Twitter. You’d need to login to those platforms and grant access before you can share your post.
12. Edit the post (if necessary)
Sometimes, you might need to edit the post after sharing. All you need to do is to go to the picture/graphic design, click the three tiny dots that appear on the right-hand corner of the post and then tap “Edit.”
Once you are done editing, click the checkmark in the right-hand corner and bingo, you are done!
Posting on Instagram is easier than you can imagine and with constant practice, you’ll become a PRO sooner than you think. As with every other platform, it is important that you engage your audience, so they can engage with you as well. Success is a two-way street. You need others as much as they need you!
